Infertility Treatment- Is it Time to Get Help? Signs of Infertility in Women

Have you been trying to get pregnant with your partner for a while? It can be hard to know when to keep trying and when it’s time to seek help. In order to know when to seek help you need to know about the symptoms of fertility problems. If you find that you have a few of the signs we’re going to discuss then maybe it’s time to visit an expert physician.

Unusual periods

This is perhaps the most noticeable of all of the signs of infertility in women. A woman will always know when something is wrong with her period even if she hasn’t been paying particular attention to it all these years.

For normal periods to occur the hypothalamus, pituitary, and ovaries all have to work in sync. So if you notice a problem with your period then a doctor will help determine where the problem is.

Other problems you might face are periods that are too painful and/or too heavy. These could be due to a condition called endometriosis where endometrial tissue is present outside the uterus. This can lead to inflammation in your pelvis which could cause infertility by causing excess fibrosis especially if it affects the fallopian tubes.

Weight changes

This isn’t too specific to fertility issues, but you should pay attention to your weight regardless. If you’re gaining or losing excess weight without any change in diet or exercise then you might have a problem.

Excess weight gain could be associated with conditions such as PCO (polycystic ovarian disease) or hyperandrogenism. If you’re losing too much weight it could be due to a metabolic problem. In either case your fertility might be affected.

Diminished sex drive

A lower sex drive alone is rarely associated with fertility. Combined with some of other things we listed here then it could be one of the signs of infertility in women. If that’s the case then you should let your doctor know so they can investigate the issue.

Vision problems

Surprisingly enough, recently worsening vision can be one of the symptoms of infertility problems. As we mentioned before a structure in your brain called the pituitary plays a role in your hormone regulation and therefore fertility.

A prolactinoma (a tumor in the pituitary) could alter the hormone chemistry in your body causing infertility. A prolactinoma can potentially affect your vision by compressing the nerves carrying light signals along their pathway from the eyes to the occipital lobe present in the back of the brain. If a prolactinoma is discovered there are many treatment options including drugs, surgery, and radiation.

Hair changes

This change can be excess or loss of body hair or even hair thinning. Conditions like PCO, hyperandrogenism, adrenal diseases can often present with excess body hair. On the other hand metabolic conditions such as thyroid disease can present with thinner or even loss of hair.

If the change in body and facial hair can be attributed to one of these conditions then treating them accordingly will almost definitely solve your fertility problems.

If you have any of these symptoms of infertility problems or a combination of them then you should see a doctor as soon as possible. Many of these conditions have effects on the body beyond those on fertility. The sooner the cause of infertility is detected and treated the better.
